Airbag: The Autocollision Exhibition Recycled

Currently showing in The Recycle Room inside Negative Space. Following the Collision Detection hang (Wire 007), the studio recycles the autocollision exhibition through The Art Professor’s Lens.

Wall-mounted pneumatic reliefs, cutaway crash cabins and woven forensic diagrams replace the intact showroom vehicle.

01 · Soft Violence & Hysteresis

Thirty Milliseconds of Architecture

An airbag is a 30-to-50-millisecond controlled chemical explosion – historically sodium azide converting to nitrogen gas – that builds a temporary wall between body and dashboard.

In The Recycle Room, spent nylon cushions, plaster limbs and stainless-steel gas cylinders are mounted directly to board-formed concrete.

02 · Passive Restraint

Protection and Intrusion

From early 1950s compressed-air cushion patents (Hetrick and Linderer) and Breed’s late-1960s crash sensor to 1990s mass adoption, the airbag is safety that does not ask you to buckle.

The mechanism is politically double: protection of the occupant and simultaneous intrusion of the system into the private cabin.
