A museum opens for a research lab that did not ask for one

Negative Space opens The Museum of Nous, a six-room project assembled from the public record of Nous Research. It is a gift, not a commission. Nous was not consulted and has not endorsed it. On view at negspc.intelligencematters.se.

WHO WE ARE

Intelligence Matters is a creative studio led by Jacob Hägg, working across image, design and code. Negative Space is its space for work made without a client brief.

WHO NOUS ARE

Nous Research is an independent AI research lab. It publishes open-source models, datasets, software and papers, which means much of its work can be inspected, downloaded and used by other people.

WHAT WE MADE

The Museum of Nous is a six-room digital exhibition assembled from Nous’s public research record. It is an expanding gift, not a commission.

THE MUSEUM OF NOUS · VIEW I A SIX-ROOM DIGITAL EXHIBITION BUILT FROM NOUS RESEARCH'S PUBLIC WORK. The laboratory enters through the archive and finds its future already wearing a museum number.

The museum begins where documentation changes temperature.

Since 2022, Nous Research has released models, datasets, papers and software into public view. It carried out a training run live over the open internet, with the loss curves and a map of participating hardware visible while it happened. It keeps a world simulator running. It also published the answer a model gave when asked who it was with no instructions at all. These things arrived as research. The museum receives them as cultural material.

The Museum of Nous is an ongoing art project inside Negative Space. Its governing rule is printed on every plate: collected from the public record. Nothing hangs that the record does not already hold.

THE MUSEUM OF NOUS · VIEW II RESEARCH MATERIAL BECOMES TABLE, CORE SAMPLE, DRAWING, RELIC AND CLOTH. The dataset has been dressed for its own autopsy.

Each work takes the shape of the thing it holds. The Hermes lineage hangs as a type specimen table: date, release, method and scale, one row per model from 2023 to 2026. A lineage is a taxonomy and a taxonomy wants a table. OpenHermes becomes a core sample, with a million rows read as strata and the last band marked given away. YaRN becomes an engineering drawing whose window opens from four thousand to one hundred and twenty-eight thousand. WorldSim is kept under glass with its console still blinking. The Consilience training run is woven into cloth, twenty trillion tokens and strangers' machines resolved into one length.

One room is given to a single answer. In August 2024 Nous released the first full-parameter fine-tune at 405B scale. Given an empty system prompt and asked who it was, the model did not know, and said so at length. Nous published that as a finding and invited anyone who wanted to reproduce it. The wing gives this uncertainty the smallest room in the building: one chair, one screen that types and deletes, nothing on the walls. The machine's failure to identify itself is treated as portraiture. A face made entirely from hesitation.

The register closes every entry with Signed-off-by, the git trailer used in the subject's own repositories. The museum borrows authority from the laboratory's native gesture. Provenance arrives one hand per line, still smelling faintly of the terminal.

AMNESIA, DisTrO and THE FOSSILS are already room-scale installations. Their walls remain open, with the next accession numbers assigned before the next objects arrive. The collection anticipates its own future.

The project was made independently. Nous Research was not consulted, has not endorsed it and is not connected to it. The wing claims nothing on the lab’s behalf. Errors will be corrected on notice.

NOTES TO EDITORS

The Museum of Nous is an expanding art project and permanent wing inside Negative Space, made as a gift to Nous Research. Six rooms sit on one closed walk. Every plate carries the line collected from the public record, and every register entry closes Signed-off-by. AMNESIA, DisTrO and THE FOSSILS are active room-scale installations with wall accession numbers reserved for future works.

Nous Research is an open-source AI laboratory, informal from 2022 and incorporated in 2023. The wing draws on the Hermes model family, the OpenHermes dataset, the YaRN paper (ICLR 2024), the WorldSim simulator, the Consilience training run, and the response the 405B model gave to an empty system prompt in August 2024 — a behaviour Nous published as a finding and invited others to reproduce. Nous Research was not consulted, has not endorsed this, and is not connected to it. No Nous mark, logo or asset is reproduced anywhere in the wing.

Negative Space is a browser-based art institution by Intelligence Matters, entered in first person. It is free to visit and made for work with no client brief.
