NEGATIVE SPACE · THE WORLD WIDE WEB, W.W.W · 21 JULY 2026

An autobiography with collision detection

A soft launch — the building is still under construction. The main gallery is now hung — seven works on the walls, BRASHY STUDIOS opened the archive, the permanent collections stand behind it, and the house drink is on the gallery table. The institution keeps the work nobody ordered: there is no brief. On view, unfinished, at negspc.intelligencematters.se.

A white Chevrolet Silverado in full side profile on a white studio sweep, its flank scraped and dented behind the cab — the damage in plain daylight.
COLLISION · THE HERO — THE CAR THE FOUNDER DROVE INTO THE REST OF HIS LIFE, LIT AS THE PRIMARY DOCUMENT

An autobiography with collision detection.

Every portfolio is an autobiography that has agreed not to say so. Negative Space withdraws the agreement. The founders' work — Brashy Studios, 2011 to 2020, Stockholm to New York to Los Angeles, and everything made under Intelligence Matters since — is laid down as terrain and handed to you with a movement key. The genre is not exhibition. The genre is the Künstlerroman, ported: the artist's novel with the reader's legs attached. Nobody takes the chapters in order, and the building holds no opinion about that.

The title is not a figure of speech. It is a car. The founder smashed it, and the wreck hangs as the hero of the main gallery, lit as evidence rather than as memory — the collision being the hour that ruled which of two available lives was going to be lived. Collision detection is the routine an engine runs so that a body cannot pass through a wall. It is also the most accurate description of a career anyone has offered. You do not steer an autobiography. You hit things, and the geometry holds.

It renders below its own resolution on purpose: nearest-neighbour, antialiasing off, nothing averaged between one state and the next. Read that as a period rather than a shortcut, the way tempera is a period. At this fidelity a photographic print and a crude primitive arrive at the same grain and the eye loses its grounds for ranking them. Code produces the variations; direction rules which ones are allowed to have happened. What arrives unasked is material, not error. LORA came back from an early, badly tuned model with more faces than the sitter, and is named after the fault that made it. MID FINGER wears the machine's famous extra knuckle straight, at maximum dose, unretouched. The house collects its own accidents and hangs them at the height of a masterpiece. This is not irony. It is provenance.

Beneath the north wall's huge portrait of it stands the drink itself — Monster White with mint, on ice. It is a refreshment and it is ammunition: to be enjoyed, or thrown at the art. The building keeps a permanent mark of every verdict and declines to recommend one. That is the nearest thing to a docent here — a thing you can drink, kept at the exact height of a thing you can throw.

The genre is not exhibition. The genre is the Künstlerroman, ported. — NEGATIVE SPACE · THE TEXT AT THE DOOR

The institution opens unfinished, on purpose — a soft launch, construction still visible. And the building's one rule already runs the whole floor: everything on view is evidence; everything served is ammunition.

The main gallery is hung to seven, and not one of them is a picture chosen to fill a wall — each is a piece of evidence the building refused to throw away. The car the founder drove into the rest of his life, lit as the primary document, the hour that decided which of two available lives got lived (COLLISION, the hero). A machine hands you a thousand versions and no opinion; the scarce thing is the eye that keeps one — and what taste kept here is a fault: the girl dressed to the collar in the studio's own output, a face the computer drew in ASCII printed over the heart, and a care-label surfaced on the front of the throat where a label must never sit, wrong and worn like a pendant (TASTE SELECTS THE TRUTH, gallery east). An early model that answered one face with a committee of faces, kept and named after its own fault, then run once more until the surplus lay down into one (LORA II, gallery west). The machine's most famous confession — one finger too many in the knot — worn straight and at maximum dose: reverse-archaeology on the disowned early-AI aesthetic, and not embarrassed by a second of it (MID FINGER, lounge south). The room after the visitors leave, so good it can no longer switch off its own authorship — empty floor, dropped sheet, abandoned trolley, each converted to a ready-made on contact (AFTER HOURS, the long wall). An advertisement that walked in and could not walk back out as one, the ready-made caught in the act of happening (VIRTUAL CLOSET, off the lounge). And an altarpiece built for a can — the house drink at devotional scale — with the referent itself standing on the table below, to be drunk or to be thrown (JET FUEL, gallery north).

One room refuses the white. BRASHY STUDIOS — the label run out of downtown Los Angeles, 2011–2020 — hangs as the archive: scans, press pages, lookbook plates, kept in the loft's own light. Nothing was restored; evidence is not supposed to be. The lounge exits east through the archive, and the archive exits into the system — the floor plan is the argument. The room stays white and quiet. The archive does not.

And on the table in the main gallery, the house serves its jet fuel: Monster White with mint in it, on ice. A huge portrait of the drink holds the north wall — the can opened, the mint flowering out of the tab. The glass on the table is to be enjoyed, or thrown at the art. The building keeps a permanent mark of every verdict; this is the institution handing you the means. It does not recommend a choice.

Behind the show stand the permanent collections. RECENT ARCHAEOLOGY — the Y2K museum: relics of the pre-algorithmic self, 1998 to 2012, held with natural-history dignity. STRUMPISM — the first ontological textile system, one sock before use and one after, at the far end of the building, the last room anyone reaches. BRASHY STUDIOS — the Los Angeles label re-created as an evidence room. THE LOUNGE — where people meet and talk. And the main gallery, currently showing An autobiography with collision detection.

What the whole thing is, plainly: Negative Space is where Intelligence Matters keeps the work nobody ordered — the outlet for the studio's most experimental and most artistic projects, run on a single line: there is no brief. Everything else the company makes answers to someone. This answers to nothing. And what can be walked today is a build, not a finished shape — the current latest cut of the institution, neither all of Negative Space nor the form it settles in. Rooms will move, the collections will grow, wings nobody has thought of yet can be built, and they will be.

NOTES TO EDITORS

Negative Space is a daylit white art institution visited in first person, alone or alongside others — part gallery, part listening room, part lounge, part a very small espresso counter. It is where Intelligence Matters keeps the work nobody ordered: the outlet for the studio's most experimental and most artistic projects, run on one line — there is no brief. It keeps a permanent mark of every verdict left on the art. Free, open now — a soft launch; construction continues around the visitor.

The permanent collections are RECENT ARCHAEOLOGY (the Y2K museum — relics of the pre-algorithmic self, 1998–2012), STRUMPISM (the first ontological textile system, the last room anyone reaches), the main gallery (currently showing An autobiography with collision detection), BRASHY STUDIOS (the archive re-created as an evidence room) and THE LOUNGE. What can be walked today is the current latest cut of the building — not all of Negative Space, and not its final shape.

Brashy Studios was a Los Angeles label, 2011–2020. Its record — scans, press pages, lookbook plates — hangs in the archive room as evidence; nothing was restored. The room keeps the loft's own light. The lounge exits east through the archive; the archive exits into the system.

The jet fuel is the house drink of Haegg Haegg Group: Monster White with mint in it, served on ice. In the main gallery it is placed on the table — a refreshment and a verdict, depending on the wrist.

Intelligence Matters is an authorship-led image studio. Negative Space is its first public space.
