Intelligence Matters, an authorship-led studio

Intelligence Matters makes pictures, and the perception around them. It calls this Image and Image — the artefact, and the aura that decides whether the artefact matters at all.

Benjamin's argument was that mechanical reproduction strips the aura from the work — the here-and-now of the thing, gone the moment it can be copied. A century on, generation has finished the artefact and left the aura standing: it is the only part that cannot be run twice. The expensive part is never the output; it is the thinking that makes the output inevitable. An image that has to ask to be admired has already lost the argument — the studio would rather make the room quieter.

It works in three mediums and treats code as one of them — a sketch material with infinite depth, where variations are not alternatives but exposures. An exposure is a duration, not a choice: the same subject held open for a different length of time. Its first public room is Negative Space, a white institution you walk through rather than browse. Intelligence is what the studio sells. The image is only where you see it.
